NY Gov. Cuomo signs nation's toughest anti-gun law

This has more to do with political ambitions (i.e., 2016 presidential bid) than anything. Predictably, it won't do anything to curb gun violence.

AP: As New York lawmakers approved the nation's toughest gun control laws, the first since the Connecticut school shooting, gun enthusiasts lined up to criticize the state for what they called an overreach driven by political ambition.

Signed into law by Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday, the New York legislation tightens a ban on assault-style rifles, calls for background checks on ammunition purchases, outlaws large-capacity magazines and tries to keep guns out of the hands of mentally ill people deemed to be a threat.

Even pro-2nd Amendment avocates could find agreement with Cuomo's last provision, right? But listen to how naive the governor thinks this will work...

In another provision, therapists, doctors and other mental health professionals will be required to tell state authorities if a patient threatens to use a gun illegally. The patient’s weapon could then be taken away.

Uh huh. Meanwhile, criminals will ignore the law, while the brunt of the new legislation will put a target on the backs of every law abiding citizen in the state of New York.
