GOP special election wins indicative of nation’s mood
From Ed Morrissey of HotAir:
“Republicans won two House seats in a special election last night. One, in Nevada, had been a relatively safe district, and Republican Mark Amodei cruised to victory over Democrat Kate Marshall as expected. Also as predicted, Republican Bob Turner won a six-point victory over Democrat David Weprin in NY-09, a Congressional district in the heart of Democratic stronghold New York City…So what did the leader of the Democratic Party have to say about the loss?”
Democratic Nation Committee chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said, “It’s a very difficult district for Democrats,” and DCCC chairman Steve Israel dismissed the loss, saying, "The results in NY-09 are not reflective of what will happen in November 2012 when Democratic challengers run against Republican incumbents who voted to end Medicare and cut Social Security while protecting tax loopholes for big corporations and the ultra wealthy." Umm…a Democrat held seat since 1923 (that’s just shy of 90 years!), a seat held since Warren Harding was President, a seat once held by Geraldine Ferraro, Chucky ‘Schmucky’ Schumer and disgraced Anthony’s Weiner (hattip: Levin)…you might want to take a closer look at this extraordinary shift, guys, before simply dismissing it. And how 'bout that tea party sentiment, huh? Oh, that's right, you guys still don't understand that one. The People of this district (Republicans, Independents and Democrats alike) decided that they no longer want to support, nor do they agree with, the radical Democratic statist policies of this regime, therefore they swung control of the NY-09 seat (that’s Brooklyn and Queens, btw) to the Republican Party, leaving liberals both shocked and in denial.
Even MSLSD couldn’t spin it: "In a sharp rebuff to President Barack Obama, Republican Bob Turner won a special House election in New York Tuesday night, giving the GOP a district that Obama had carried with 55 percent in 2008 and which Democrats had held for years."
At his historic victory speech, this citizen candidate sent a clear message directly from his supporters to Obama, “Mr. President, we are on the wrong track. We have had it with the irresponsible fiscal policy which endangers the entire economy and every one of our social safety networks. We’ve had it with your treatment of Israel. We seek leadership and direction in returning prosperity and finding jobs for the people of this district. We are unhappy. I am telling you; I am the messenger. Heed us. This message will resound for a full year and will resound into 2012. We only hope that our voices are heard, and we can start putting things right again.”
This message was echoed from Republican leadership:
House Speaker John Boehner: “Tonight New Yorkers have delivered a strong warning to the Democrats who control the levers of power in our federal government. It’s time to scrap the failed ‘stimulus’ agenda and the misguided policies on Israel and focus on getting America back to creating jobs again.”
House Majority Leader Eric Cantor: "[Turner] understands the special relationship that America has with our friend Israel. His victory tonight is an indicator that the Middle East policy pursued by the Obama Administration does not sit well with the many people who care deeply about the U.S./Israel relationship."
The NRCC chairman Pete Sessions: "This clear rebuke of President Obama’s policies delivers a blow to Democrats’ goal of making Nancy Pelosi the Speaker again. New Yorkers put Washington Democrats on notice that voters are losing confidence in a President whose policies assault job-creators and affront Israel. An unpopular President Obama is now a liability for Democrats nationwide in a 2012 election that is a referendum on his economic policies."
Trump added to the sentiment with an exclusive release to NewsMax:
“I must admit that I have done a lot of promotion throughout my career, but my foray into robo-calling this past week on behalf of Bob Turner in the congressional district where I grew up was a unique first experience which I am happy to see helped produce a historic result.
So why did this happen? The voters in NY-9 were faced with two very different options yesterday. One was a liberal Democrat who championed all of Obama’s policies, which have failed this country and precipitated our economic problems. Further, not only did the Democrat have absolutely no private sector experience like Obama, but he also had the exact mindset of Obama – any and every problem can be solved by another government program, more spending and tax increases.
It goes without saying that Obama will not get the message. In fact he will continue to double down on his anti-prosperity policies. Only this past Monday did he release yet another plan under the guise of a ‘Jobs Bill’ which promises to raise taxes on those who actually hire workers and have capital. He just doesn’t get it."
These wins, particularly the one in deep-blue New York, but the one in Harry Reid's backyard can't go without commending as well, are indicative of the overall national mood that the People are deeply disgruntled with the policies of the Obama Administration, as well as what’s become of the Democrat Party. As Rush said during his show today, “even in the far-Left…there are deep pockets of resistance to this regime. What does it mean? It means it’s time for Republicans to stop being mealy-mouthed…people are tired of being hurt by [this administration] and they want it reversed.” Note to GOP leadership, Republican congressional candidates and, particularly, presidential candidates: Neither of these men won by touting moderation or compromise with the radical in the White House or his destructive policies. Keep that in mind when your on the campaign trail!
