Newsmax: President Barack Obama is floating the idea of making it mandatory to vote in the United States.Look, it'd be ideal for as many people to vote in elections as possible. I'd prefer more show up to vote (I think Obama would change his tune if they did!). However, voting is a free will right of all citizens -- that includes the practice of protesting through the ballet box by not voting, or simply being fed up with politics altogether and opting out -- not a mandate.
Obama is discussing voting rights and campaign finance in an appearance at the City Club of Cleveland. He says the U.S. should be making it easier — not harder — to vote.
The president is noting that countries like Australia have mandatory voting. He says if everyone voted in the U.S., it would completely change the political map.
Obama says it would be "transformative" and would counteract the influence of money in politics more than anything else.
Would there be a fine (which is actually a tax) that would be imposed for not voting? An inverted poll tax? Is this another way of raising taxes? We know his affinity for it.
Such a mandate could open up Pandora's box in so many ways, especially under such malevolent rule. What of those incapable of voting due to ailment or age? Would our little deviant prefer voting representatives for them? I'm sure there'd be no corruption there! And I'm certain he'd want to filter in the imprisoned whose crimes have stripped their voting rights away. Wonder how they'd vote? You know how they'd vote!
This also takes Voter ID laws, which fight against voter fraud, off the table, just the way he'd like it.
And while I would agree that there's too much money in politics today, never confuse what the consummate campaigner intends in counteracting the influence of money in politics...he means limiting the other sides ability to fund raise, not his own.
Here's a mandate you'd never hear uttered from the mouth of Barack: You shouldn't vote unless you pay taxes! Yeah, that'd be too disruptive to the Welfare State.
ADDENDUM: Levin weighed in last night...
"He's supporting this not out of good government motivations because he thinks everybody should participate. He's supporting this because he believes it'll help his party. That's all. That simple. And because certain people that he believes who are within the Democrat constituency won't voluntarily vote, they should be compelled by the government to vote. So this is Obama, this is tyranny, this is totalitarianism. ... He's given this a lot of thought. He thinks a lot about how to destroy the country and empower himself."
