NOLA: Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid's announcement Friday (March 27) that he won't seek re-election in 2016 is a reminder that one of the Senate's recent traditions -- regular verbal battles between Reid and Sen. David Vitter, R-La. -- are about to end. Vitter has already announced that he hopes to leave the Senate after the 2015 Louisiana gubernatorial election, which he is currently favored to win.
So, it looks like reporters seeking a contentious series of quotes to spice up a story will have to look to others to fill the void.
Just a little over two weeks ago, Reid said that he'd be happy to debate all amendments to a pending human trafficking bill once Republicans drop language barring funding from fines paid by trafficking perpetrators from going towards abortions. "We're happy to debate all the amendments they want ... including Vitter's stupid amendment," Reid said.
He was referring to Vitter's amendment to bar birthright citizenship status for children born in the United States, even if their parents aren't U.S. citizens or have legal status.
Vitter responded, in kind.
"Harry Reid calling my effort to end birthright citizenship abuse 'Vitter's stupid amendment' is right up there with the highest of compliments, considering the source," Vitter said. "Thank you, Harry, for building attention and credibility on this important issue."To reiterate, lie, cheat or steal, Reid's all in for the party, whatever abandonment of any remnant of principle it takes.
