Beyond Davis: Conservatives must look to our Ultimate Guide

Much attention has surrounded the Texas Legislature's effort to protect the unborn past the 20-week mark, along with the political exploits of Wendy Davis, who condemns politicians using abortion "to boost their own political aspirations," while doing precisely that to advance her own, and admittedly so!

HotAir took a few interesting excerpts from Stuart Rothenberg's latest RollCall piece entitled, "It’s uphill all the way for social conservatives," that are worth relating...
Starting with TV shows like “All in the Family,” “Diff’rent Strokes” and “Maude,” progressing to the very funny “Will & Grace” and going right up to today’s most obvious example, “Glee,” television has pushed socially progressive themes. Socially progressive characters are enlightened and admirable, while traditionalists are unappealing, to say the least. …

But it wasn’t only surrounding the Supreme Court’s opinions on marriage that some of the recent media coverage seemed tilted.

On his final show hosting CNN’s “Reliable Sources” on Sunday, media critic Howard Kurtz commented on the media’s very sympathetic treatment of Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis, whose 11-hour filibuster at the end of a special session prevented the enactment of a bill limiting abortions and requiring facilities performing abortions to meet certain standards.

“If Wendy Davis had been conducting a lonely filibuster against abortion rights,” Kurtz asked, “would the media have celebrated her in quite the same way?” Kurtz didn’t offer an answer — because he didn’t have to. The answer certainly would have been “no.”
I don't necessarily subscribe to Rothenberg's (and so many others') coinage of 'social conservative.' Either you strive for consistency in a principled manner or you drift whichever way the political winds blow. But just to play along, Rothenberg deduces that the greatest problem for social conservatives may be the undermining of traditional religious authority and belief. And although this is certainly not something new, it would seem that such cultural ripples which we've experienced as of recent, whether in congressional actions towards amnesty or the Supreme Court's decisions redefining marriage or Davis' filibustering of Life, as well as the media and entertainment communities that celebrate all of it, only reinforce that obvious conclusion.

As Rush recently expressed, all of our standards of decency, decorum and behavior are being challenged. There can be little doubt that in the ebb and flow of politics and society, there is an unquestionable assault on the source of morality in this nation today. Now we must strategize ways to deal with it and look to that source as our Ultimate Guide.
