Of course Democrats want jobless benefits extended in any fiscal cliff deal. Gotta take care of their dependent constituency...
AP: Hovering in the background of the "fiscal cliff" debate is the prospect of 2 million people losing their unemployment benefits four days after Christmas.
"This is the real cliff," said Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I. He's been leading the effort to include another extension of benefits for the long-term unemployed in any deal to avert looming tax increases and massive spending cuts in January.
Think about what some of these terms mean: long-term unemployed? massive spending cuts? Umm, there won't be any 'massive' cuts in any deal, even if it's honestly what we need. Bank on that. As far as the 'long-term' unemployed...well, you know what that means: the welfare lifestyle.
I guess Democrats didn't consider that as the cooked unemployment rate falls, compensation extensions are designed to end. Or maybe they did, and relied on the news not catching up with them until after the election.
