The world watches as London riots said to have begun as a reaction to a questionable police shooting of a questionable individual quickly transformed into an ongoing display of violent youth terrorizing the community that has absolutely NOTHING to do with its claimed origins. Seemingly picking up from Greece, and like a statist page taken out of Obama and the Left’s playbook (in this case, moving beyond mere 'talk'), class warfare has taken center stage.
Listen as these ‘girls’ absurdly claim to show the government, conservatives, police, the rich people, “yeah, whoever it is, I don’t know” that “we can do what we want.”
“It was madness. It was good though. It was good fun. Yeah…free alcohol!”
Or as this woman proclaims in the midst of looting, "We're taking our taxes back!"
Along with many businesses being burnt out, there’s also confirmation of innocent passers-by being stripped and robbed…
Fox News says, “Reports on Twitter claimed some people were being stripped, while another shocking video shows a bleeding teenager being robbed in broad daylight by lawless thugs who pretend to help him to his feet.”
The UK’s Telegraph compares and contrasts Philadelphia’s recent ‘flash mob’ attacks, and suggests taking Mayor Nutter’s approach of beefing up police patrols, imposing a curfew on minors, and introducing escalating fines for the parents of these ‘children’, saying that London Mayor Johnson and Prime Minister Cameron “could clearly learn a thing or two from the Mayor of Philadelphia about talking tough,” when Nutter proclaimed to members of criminal gangs, “If you want to be aggressive, we’re going to be aggressive. Let me just share this with you. We’ve got the biggest, baddest gang in town – a committed group of citizens and a committed government – and we’re working together and we’re not going to have this nonsense anymore.” And it appears as though Cameron’s taken the advice with orders for 16,000 officers to use plastic bullets in an effort to quell the riots and regain London.
In one of many European countries that has been forced to impose austerity measures to keep itself afloat from the massive debt burdens of the decades past statist strides (free healthcare, free college tuition, free this, free that), London finds itself in the midst of the resulting anarchy from a dependent class when it doesn’t get what it wants. These entitled reactions are VERY REAL, unlike the liberals' false assertions of tea party violence, because we dare seek a return towards true liberty and self-reliance. So don’t think this couldn’t happen in America, as illustrated through the Philadelphia incidents and others. Whether here or there, statism is as statism does.
UPDATE: Looks like the riots have spread to other parts of England overnight. Likewise, the economic uncertainty, whether that be protests over the rising cost of living or riotous reaction to austerity programs, appears to be leading to unrest across the globe. Statism is failing, and there's nothing glamorous about the inflicted results.

Two Monday monologues say it all
First Rush’s…
“What we have witnessed since Friday [is] Obamageddon, Barackolypse Now; and the only silver lining out there is that as far as 2012 goes Obama’s now Debt Man Walking.”
Not to mention his six pages of news headlines that read "Obama blames..." Google it!
Then Levin’s (first honoring our military men who died in that helicopter incident over the weekend)…
Then Levin’s (first honoring our military men who died in that helicopter incident over the weekend)…
“What’s going on is more than a downgrade of the government’s credit rating. It’s even more than a downgrade of the economy. The federal government is literally attempting to replace the civil society…The path we are on is the path towards tyranny.”
Besides the market’s 634 point slide, these two conservative champions pretty much say all there is to say about the Obama Administration's downgrade.

The Left's 'tea party' Tourette's
Yes, it was predictable. The Left ridiculed our tea flavored congressional members' desire for responsible governance during, and soon after, the debt debate. They, as well as the Republican establishment, thought once Cut, Cap & Balance was axed, that would be the end of our resilience. They were wrong. And when tea party members of Congress continued to demand a responsible approach throughout one band-aid proposal after another (including the final bamboozle), they called our representatives 'hostage takers' and 'terrorists' for wanting a better deal towards real debt reduction and actual economic recovery, including job stability.
Like clockwork, as soon as the S&P downgrade was announced, who do you think the Left's Tourette's was aimed towards? That's right...TEA PARTY, TEA PARTY, TEA PARTY!
Sidebar: Do Democrats have weekly meetings to discuss who'll be the 'target of the week'? Seems like it, but I digress...
Contrary to Sen. Kerry's wishes, the media seems quite happy to oblige the Left's plight in attempted tea party blame of the downgrade. The parroted White House marching orders appear clear, from John Kerry to David Axelrod...
...TEA PARTY, TEA PARTY, TEAP PARTY! Nevermind the two-and-a-half years of excessively larger Obama Administration spending levels exceeding even Bush's exorbitant amounts (or preceding Obama, all presidents combined, for that matter). These guys have forgotten the old adage that when pointing the finger of blame, three are pointing right back. And even John McLame can see it! In all actuality, the People see this for exactly what it is: liberal PANIC! The buck stops where? Don't look for Truman's placard on Obama's desk.
As explained in the previous post, when a credit rating agency asks for a particular level of debt reduction in any plan, and Congress (especially those members of the progressively liberal persuasion) wish not to allot for serious spending cuts, opting instead to only pass half of what's requested with undying hopes of tax (excuse me, 'revenue') increases, then what could possibly be expected? And speaking of 'revenues', the Left has also implied that S&P requested those increased, completely bypassing the focal point of debt reduction. Setting the record straight, to a Democrat, that means tax hikes; for Republicans, that means job creation that automatically infuses more revenue into the economy. And it's important to point out, job creation through the free market, NOT the 'saved or created' hoax of Big Government. I'm willing to take a stab at which idea more Americans would have confidence in.
Furthermore, the business community appears to have a clear grasp of Obama's policies, and where its vote of no confidence resides, from Wynn to Trump to this lady...
If there's any blame to assign for the downgrade, it is on those factions of politicians who'd borrow and spend our nation into oblivion without any responsible plan to pay off that debt, except to further burden the American taxpayer once again for their criminal negligence. And whose policies reside in that mindset? We all know the answer. Looking into the near future, if these same politicians, directed by the Statist-in-Chief, can't get their act together and reduce the long-term debt, another downgrade will be just around the corner. It's time to repeal and replace these temporary rulers, top down!
But for now, we'll continue to endure the Left's panic though their tea party Tourette's, and while some of our spokespersons will make it through the biased media gauntlet, we should not be deterred from the responsible path that this important movement has paved for the betterment of our country.

It's official: U.S. DOWNGRADED!
We've known of the smaller credit rating agencies' forecasts, and now it looks as though the dominos are beginning to topple with the larger ones. In a statement released Friday evening, after the markets closed of course, Standard & Poor's issued the first DOWNGRADE in the rating agency's history.
CBS reports:
The credit rating agency says that it is cutting the country's top AAA rating by one notch to AA-plus. The credit agency said late Friday that it is making the move because the deficit reduction plan passed by Congress on Tuesday did not go far enough to stabilize the country's debt situation and that the policymaking is not stable or effective as needed to address the current economic challenge.
In explaining its decision, S&P said in a statement that "the downgrade reflects our view that the effectiveness, stability, and predictability of American policymaking and political institutions have weakened at a time of ongoing fiscal and economic challenges to a degree more than we envisioned when we assigned a negative outlook to the rating on April 18, 2011."
It added: "The outlook on the long-term rating is negative. We could lower the long-term rating to 'AA' within the next two years if we see that less reduction in spending than agreed to, higher interest rates, or new fiscal pressures during the period result in a higher general government debt trajectory than we currently assume in our base case."
Now what was that again that Timmy 'Tax Cheat' Geithner assured us of back in April...oh yeah...
As one would imagine, Hot Air is covering the downgrade news like a hawk! And Eric Erickson at RedState makes the point that while the Left will rush to blame the GOP for the S&P downgrade, it would be wise to recall that ONLY the tea party had a $4 trillion plan, with bipartisan agreement in the House to boot, and that was Cut, Cap & Balance!
You know, when a credit rating agency tells Washington '$4T in cuts would be a 'good start' towards avoiding a downgrade', then the powers that be make a deal to only cut half of that (if you're willing to believe those cuts are even 'real'), there's really no reason to expected anything other than a downgrade! Thanks Barry, thanks Timmy, thanks Dems, thanks for nothing...and we won't forget Reid, McConnell and Boehner's compromise in this either. Piss poor leadership will guide a country to its own demise every time...and no amount of rhetorical finesse can soften the blow. This is President Barack Hussein Obama's economy now!

Improper representation is more than 'halfway' killing the economy

USA Today: Poll: Thumbs down on the debt-ceiling deal
"The hard-won, last-minute agreement to raise the debt ceiling and cut the deficit gets low ratings from Americans, who by more than 2-1 predict it will make the nation's fragile economy worse rather than better."
Gallup: More American oppose than favor debt ceiling agreement
"Americans as a whole increasingly view the debt and deficit as a problem, with the percentage naming it as the most important problem in recent months the highest in more than a decade."
...and speaking about how much the People disapproved of the substance of the debt deal, Rush made a very sound, yet profound, observation on the state of governance and the governed, aimed at not only Democrats, but some in the Republican Party as well:
"It is really, really interesting, folks, that our representatives 'represent' us so poorly. We really have come down now to the basic 'taxation without representation'. You look at it, poll after poll, election after election, shows that we are not being well served by our elected ones. Every poll shows that the majority of the American People disapprove of the policies of either the Administration or what's coming out of Congress. They are governing against the Will of the People, and every poll shows it. We are the majority. We've made a decision on the type of government we want. The problem is our politicians are ignoring it and giving us the kind of government they want."
Remember Pelosi's words...or that familiar Rahm Emanuel phrase...
Also pointing to the tanking market yesterday, Rush reflected on Obama's own words (at his birthday bash, no less):
"People are losing their life savings. This is not new. This has been going on ever since Obama was immaculated. They're not only losing their jobs, they're losing their life savings and their kids have lost their life savings. Their fetuses have lost their life savings. Their thoughts of future children who haven't even been conceived yet have lost their life savings and their chance to earn anything before they save it. That's what Obama means.
The scariest thing, folks, I have to tell you, the scariest thing Obama said during his birthday fundraiser last night, he said, "It's been a long, tough journey. But we have made some incredible strides together. Yes, we have. But the thing that we all ought to remember is that as much as good as we have done, precisely because the challenges were so daunting, precisely because we were inheriting so many challenges, that we're not even halfway there yet." So he's not even halfway done killing the economy. That's scary."
So, only days following the compromise that made no progress towards reducing our debt, we're informed of the immediate ramifications of Washington's really bad deal: Our government has devoured 60% of its new debt limit in one day (the single largest bump in U.S. history), raising borrowing to 100% of our GDP! Add the revised unemployment numbers to the equation, and one might presume that market decline on the day the deal was signed, as well as the 500+ point Wall Street rout that occurred yesterday, might have something to do with it. Well, Obama will tell you 'you're wrong'. He once again conveniently finds blame in other sources: the Japanese tsunami, Arab Spring, pretty much whatever straws can be grabbed...and oh yeah, unemployment benefits actually create jobs! Say...isn't that a line from Pelosi? No matter...and if you don't believe every word they say, well then John Kerry's got a plan to force you to with his un-fairness doctrine. Huh, what a hobbit-phobe!
Seriously, folks, these are NOT the music makers nor the dreamers of dreams! WE are.

The leaderless and the statesmen
With the pretentiously named Budget Control Act of 2011 ushered through the Senate and quickly signed into law by the President on Tuesday, I think it’s worthwhile to slow down and take a look at our so-called leaders in the Senate compared to the responsible coalition of the few, but principled, among their ranks. First, the Senate leaders…
Mitch McConnell
“Now I know that for some of our colleagues, reform isn’t coming as fast as they’d like, and I certainly understand their frustration. I too wish we could stand here today enacting something much more ambitious, but I’m encouraged by the thought that these new Senators will help lead this fight until we finish the job. And I want to assure you today that although you may not see it this way, you’ve actually won this debate.”
Really? Besides a plan that neither the majority leader nor the minority leader seem to agree upon within the terms of the legislation passed (or perhaps that's just their perception ploy), how is winning a debate that results in opposing legislative action perceived as some celebratory victory? Yes, it is encouraging to see our new Senators stand up to Big Government, but to convince us that this nonproductive bill takes our economy in any positive direction is deceptive nonsense, and the tea party realizes this, Mitch.
“It doesn’t include a dime, not a dime, in job-killing tax hikes.”
Here’s McConnell’s ‘Read My Lips’ moment in which he’s regrettably underestimated his ‘friends’ across the aisle.
“And I want to thank my friend the majority leader [Reid] for his work in getting this agreement over the finish line. We may disagree a lot, but I hope everyone realizes, it’s never, ever, personal.”
And isn’t that part of the problem? These guys puff up their chests, perform their political theater for one another, for the media, for the cameras to transmit across the nation; but when it comes to impoverishing the taxpayer and driving the economy over the cliff, it isn’t personal.
Harry Reid
"We've had too much talk the last few days of Republicans as early as this morning, Republican leaders in the Senate saying there will be no revenue. That's not going to happen. Otherwise, the trigger is going to kick in. The only way we can arrive at a fair arrangement for the American people with this joint committee is to have equal sharing. It's going to be painful. Each party if they do the right thing, it's going to be painful for them because to be fair, we have to move forward. There has to be equal spending cuts, there has to be some revenue that matches that."
See, Mitch…the majority leader has a different take on the relationship between the super committee and the trigger. Fair and balanced (ha!) means tax hikes in both Harry and Barry’s collective consciousness. And if Republicans can't accept that, they'll be forced to make Defense cuts. The GOP leadership has placed the party between a rock and a hard place. Way to use your half a loaf, guys.
“But I can’t let go without responding to my friend who boasted, in his own way, about the new Senators and new members of Congress who came here. I welcome them all, but as result of the tea party direction of this Congress, the past few months has been very, very disconcerting and very unfair to the American people. It stopped us from arriving at a conclusion much earlier, and we must go forward.”
Poor, poor Harry. Besides not being able to keep his dementia-prone mind off the tea party, now he has to smell the people on the Senate floor! So unfair. Seriously though, Reid’s agitation stems simply from the fact that there are now members of the Senate, and in the House, who dare challenge the entrenched power brokers. He, like the rest of the statist Democrats, views these tea party members not as representatives of the People, but as obstacles to Big Government, and this concerns them. However, he and the President both know that as long as they’re led by feckless leadership, conservative Republicans can still be restrained…and this is what they’ll count on through 2012.
This deal is without doubt a joke, but the influence of the tea party is not. The concerted effort of principled conservatives isn’t extreme or crazy, it isn’t terroristic or absolutist; it’s a reflection of the Will of the People, exemplary of what it’s going to take to get our government’s fiscal house in order, and we need many more. Now, let’s contemplate their Senate positions on this deal…
Jim DeMint
Sen. DeMint's press release echoed his statements on the Senate floor:
“This debt deal puts America at risk and does nothing to solve our spending crisis. We haven’t changed direction in Washington. We’re just tapping the brakes as we speed toward a fiscal cliff.
The President will now be responsible for nearly $6 trillion in new debt in just four years in office, more than any other president before him. The President’s reckless spending policies have made things worse, leaving our economy in shambles and Americans with less hope for the future. To grow the economy, we must stop growing government.
This bill doesn’t cut the debt; it will add about $7 trillion in new debt over the next ten years on the backs of our children and grandchildren. This bill doesn’t stop deficit spending; it locks in trillion dollar spending deficits for years to come. This bill doesn’t stop tax hikes; Republicans and Democrats are already promising to consider job destroying tax hikes in this new Super Committee. This bill doesn’t protect our nation; it puts national security at risk with unbalanced cuts to funding our troops in the field. This bill doesn’t guarantee our AAA rating; it puts it at further risk as the world sees Washington as incapable of cutting wasteful spending.
I want to applaud Speaker Boehner and Leader McConnell for doing their best, but they were negotiating with a President and Democrat party that refused real solutions and sought a blank check for their big-spending agenda. However, this deal isn’t anywhere close to what needs to be done to save our nation from bankruptcy.
This sad debate makes it clear that Washington will never stop spending more than it takes in until Congress is forced to with a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution.”
While still remaining civil, a stark difference in tone, one of integrity and frankness, is detected by this stalwart conservative kingmaker, who has proven time and time again to move against the all-too-common current of our Big Government behemoth and side with the Will of the People that too many in Washington have disregarded. It is with this character that is understandably why Sen. DeMint would also defend the tea party a day earlier from V.P. Biden and Congressman Doyle’s slanders. And speaking earlier to McConnell's 'it's never, ever, personal' comment, another symptom of the problem lies in that last image of the above video, in which Sen. DeMint notes the abscence of a quorum (i.e., an empty Senate).
Along with DeMint’s comments on the failings of this so-called Budget Control Act, here’s what other tea party conservatives said on the Senate floor throughout Tuesday’s debate…
Rand Paul
"What America needs is a balanced budget and an economy that grows and thrives and creates jobs. Yet, a malaise hangs in the air. America is a ship without a captain. Instead of the president chastising job creators and preaching class envy, we need a president that will show us leadership. The president needs to accept responsibility for an economy that has worsened under his failed leadership. Unemployment is up. Gas prices have doubled. This president will add more debt than all 43 presidents combined. America got a deal on August 2, but not a solution. What America wants is a solution, not a deal. I hope in the next six months the president will find it within himself to lead the nation, the courage to lead and embrace reform, the reform that is necessary to get this great country going again."
Mike Lee
"I stand today to explain my reasons for voting against the debt limit increase that we will be voting on in just about a half an hour from now. This is a crisis that America faces. It's an ongoing crisis that will neither be created nor eliminated with today's vote. This is a crisis that has been building gradually over the course of years, decades, in fact. It's a crisis that we have certainly known about ever since this Congress was sworn in January of this year. This is a crisis that threatens potentially every federal program from defense to entitlements, because as we continue to borrow more money as a nation, adding to the already almost $15 trillion that we have accumulated in national debt, roughly $150,000 for every taxpayer in America, as we continue to add to that enormous debt, we get closer and closer to the unknown, but nonetheless existing point at which we will no longer be able to borrow, at least not at interest rates that will make this kind of borrowing sustainable."
Marco Rubio
"The facts still remain that this coming month and every month to come, more or less, this government will spend $300 billion a month. That's a lot of money. More than any government has ever spent in the history of man. $180 billion of that $300 billion is money that we collect from the people of our country through taxes and fees and other ways. But, we borrow $120 billion a month to pay our $300 billion-a-month bill. That's just too much money. That's too much money for Republicans. It's too much money for Democrats. It's just too much money. Although we should be happy that tomorrow and in the days to come we're not facing a default, an inability to meet our bills, the truth is, an undeniable one, that I don't think anyone here would disagree with me when I say, we can't keep borrowing $120 billion every month or more. Because, the day will come when the people who lend us that money will stop lending us that money."
Oh, what I wouldn’t give for a couple dozen more from the DeMint crew! Then there’d be no doubt that effective statesmanship could quickly return to a Capitol that hasn’t seen it in quite sometime. And although there are many shorts and sparks flying throughout the craft of government, we are nonetheless on a slow burn, so 2012 is still alterable. Never give up and never surrender! Take the Rush and Levin approach towards the media and extend the middle finger to them. Resilience is a MUST. Focus on the targets of Big Government's destructive forces, and spread the word to all Americans, VOTE THEM OUT! First and foremost, the statists; then the enablers will crumble.

Oh, the civility…
Ahhh, that new tone of civility has been on full display throughout the heat of the debt ceiling debate. Rush shared a pleasant little media montage with us last Friday of Democrats talking about the Tea Party. Feel the love?
STENY HOYER: (rotunda noise) The Republicans are holding hostage the credit of the United States of America.
DEBBIE "BLABBERMOUTH" SCHULTZ: ...our Republican colleagues to hold our economy hostage.
DINGY HARRY: The Republican Party is holding our economy hostage.
CHUCK-U SCHUMER: (rotunda noise) It didn't say, "Hold America hostage."
LOUISE SLAUGHTER: ...hold the debt ceiling hostage.
SHELDON WHITEHOUSE: One party is holding the country hostage.
JOHN OLVER: The debt limit has never before been held hostage.
BARBARA LEE: Republicans are holding our economy hostage.
EARL BLUMENAUER: ...willing to take hostage the debt ceiling.
JASON ALTMIRE: Stop holding America's credit rating hostage.
ROSA DeLAURO: The Republican majority continues to hold the American economy hostage.
CHRIS VAN HOLLEN: Let's not hold the entire American economy hostage.
JOHN LARSON: ...ideological hostage situation...
LLOYD DOGGETT: The only belt they're really tightening is right around the neck of those hostages.
JAMES CLYBURN: Holding the American economy hostage.
JESSE JACKSON, JR.: This president is being treated differently!
SPEAKER PRO-TEM: (gavel banging)
JACKSON: No other president has been stuck up, shook down, or held hostage!
And here’s more from Friday and into this week…
Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) on 7/29/11 @ 07:20 min.
“I think in the last 24 hours, we’ve confirmed what many people suspected, which is that the tea party Republicans may be a noisy and effective protest movement, but they’re unfit to govern.”
Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) on 7/29/11
From Real Clear Politics:
"You know the Chinese are looking at us right now and they are just gleeful and incredulous at the way in which one of the great competitors is imploding on itself, because a group of absolutists and extremists don't understand the implication of what they are doing, and prepared to hold the entire economy hostage and it is unprecedented of anything I have seen in all of the time I have been in public life, and I think it is damaging and dangerous and reckless and irresponsible," Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) told MSNBC.
Rep. Mike Doyle (D-PA) and Vice President Joe Biden on 8/1/11
From Politico:
Biden was agreeing with a line of argument made by Rep. Mike Doyle (D-Pa.) at a two-hour, closed-door Democratic Caucus meeting.
“We have negotiated with terrorists,” an angry Doyle said, according to sources in the room. “This small group of terrorists have made it impossible to spend any money.”
Biden, driven by his Democratic allies’ misgivings about the debt-limit deal, responded: “They have acted like terrorists.”
I might be reading too much into this, but I’d swear they have a problem with the tea party movement (a.k.a. the growing number of Americans who are fed up with the tax-and-spend Washington mentality).
The truth of the matter is that the new tone is the old tone. Demagogue to shut down Republican dissent, regardless of the merit, while Democrats play it up for the cameras, throw tizzies and end up getting things on their terms, their way. And as long as Republicans have ineffective leadership, the tone will remain as such. It is for all these reasons, and more, why we fight.
ADDENDUM: No, we haven't forgotten about the dregs at the liberal New York Slimes who'd call us a 'Hezbollah faction' or refer to us in terms of terrorists, jihadists and suicide bombers...but this post had more to do with the elected officials that effect our daily lives, as opposed to the liberal carnival barkers.

Mark says it all...
There's not much else to add that Levin doesn't thoroughly cover about this dastardly deal...
A bad deal: the devil's in the details (UPDATE: bad to worse)
Upon delving into the substance of the latest deal on Capitol Hill, one finds that the devil really is in the details. The U.K. Mail reports with this indictment of a headline, Middle classes to be hit by tax increase by the back door: Obama and Boehner face furious backlash from their own parties as last minute debt deal is slammed a 'fudge':
President Barack Obama awoke today to furious reaction to his last-minute debt deal, with experts slamming the agreement as a cruel means of hitting middle classes with tax hikes 'through the back door'.
The President and congressional leaders last night finally announced an agreement on emergency legislation to avert the nation's first-ever financial default.
But while the dramatic resolution briefly lifted a cloud that had threatened the still-fragile economic recovery, critics said in the long run the middle classes would bear the brunt of the country's massive debt, with increased taxes set to cover for the White House's reluctance to cut public spending.
And RedState gives 9 essential reasons to oppose the Boehner 4.0 debt deal that's well worth reading! From the first...
1) Obama gets his full lifeline, long-term debt limit increase that will take him beyond the election ($2.1-2.4 trillion), without making any transformational concession. There is no realistic roadmap to entitlement reform; not a single agency or program, domestic or mandatory, will be eliminated; Obamacare is off limits; there will be no balanced budgets, ever. We will still add trillions more to the debt over the next ten years. Yes, there is a second tranche that will trigger the latter $1.2-1.5 trillion increase, but unlike previous versions of Boehner’s plan, Republicans have no control over that trigger to use it as a precondition.
...to the last, this is far from the tea party celebrated deal that the MSM is attempting to sell us. Furthermore, there's no enforcement mechanism towards any cuts in spending (it's already been revised down to $2.1T by the CBO), while the Bush tax cuts will end as the Obamacare tax hikes begin, amounting to the largest tax increases in the history of our country...not to mention the two largest back-to-back debt ceiling increases in American history! Seriously, Republican leadership? This is the deal you guys want to sign off on?
Only addressing the debt ceiling, without actually addressing the debt crisis, does nothing to help the economy, because it doesn't limit the growth government. But rest assured, as the all-seeing, all-knowing Maha Rushie just pointed out, Obama will use this as another reelection bullet point to say that we tried spending cuts, but it didn't work, so we're going to have to go after 'the rich'...and the 'shared sacrifice' will undoubtedly extend to the middle class, leading to Rush's self-titled Plan C I Told You So. As one caller succintly summed up, this plan gives Obama the opportunity to 'kill the economy, raise taxes and blame it on Republicans'. Will America allow him to get away with it?
UPDATE: Well, that went from bad to worse, not just in the 269-161 passage of the bill in the House, but in the $2.1T in spending cuts over 10 years to the $2.1T in the debt ceiling hike through 2012...that's a negative wash. So much for Boehner's required 72-hour waiting period to read a bill...this was more like 72 hours! And let's not forget the media saps...they're still obliviously repeating the same line that there will be no tax increases...what a surprise (or delight) they'll be in for when they find out the opposite of their under-informed reporting. So much for responsible action taken towards debt reduction. Now brace for the ensured downgrade.

The weekend tranche: do we have a deal?
More of Friday & Saturday's Washington sideshow took place throughout a good portion of Sunday morning and into the afternoon; but by mid-afternoon, it appeared that a deal brokered with more finite details. Jake Tapper reported:
The agreement looks like this: if the super-committee tasked with entitlement and tax reform fails to come up with $1.5 trillion in deficit reduction that passes Congress, the “neutron bomb” goes off, -- as one Democrat put it -- spending cuts that will hit the Pentagon budget most deeply, as well as Medicare providers (not beneficiaries) and other programs.
If the super-committee comes up with some deficit reduction but not $1.5 trillion, the triggers would make up the difference.
So it’s a minimum $2.7 trillion deficit reduction deal.
And the debt ceiling will be raised by $2.4 trillion in two tranches: $900 billion immediately, and the debt ceiling will be raised by an additional $1.5 trillion next year – either through passage of a Balanced Budget Amendment, which is unlikely, or with Congress voting its disapproval..

So we're looking at around a $2.7T deficit reduction plan, still short of the $4T suggested cut to avoid a downgrade. BTW, any coincidence that S&P suggested this amount, which happens to be about as much as what Obama's policies have cost us over the past two-and-a-half years?! The overspending of the last administration and the excessively higher spending of the current have inevitably set us on a path towards guaranteed downgrade. But I digress...
By the evening, it appeared that Democrat and Republican leaders of both houses, along with President Obama, signed off on a deal. As earlier suspected, it seems that the decision for "total reductions would be equally split between defense and non-defense programs. Across-the-board cuts would also apply to Medicare. Other programs, including Social Security, Medicaid, veterans, and civil & military pay, would be exempt," and apparently, Boehner signed off on the 50/50 split when it was determined that the "compromise on defense was to include foreign aid, Homeland Sec., etc. in “security” category of cuts so they didn’t fall so heavily on DOD."
Timothy Carney's Washington Examiner piece gives an interesting take on the weekend tranche:
As the debt-ceiling debate wrapped up over the weekend, Democrats once again gave Republicans what they wanted on substance, in exchange for Republicans giving Democrats what they wanted on politics.
Abandoned in the debt deal are the liberal ideal of "shared sacrifice" (i.e., tax increases) and the Keynesian tenet of government spending surges during recessions. Preserved is the political framing that helps the Democrats in the 2012 election: no more embarrassing debt-limit votes before the election, no prominent debate on a balanced budget amendment, and a stage set for some good old corporate-jets-vs.-Medicare demagoguery.
Details of the debt deal were still being finalized as this column went to press, but it appears that the White House and Senate Democrats have agreed to up to $3 trillion in spending cuts with possibly no tax increases. On substantive grounds this is a complete Democratic surrender.
Democrat surrender? Not exactly. Pardon my skepticism, but I don't hold anything, ANYTHING, past the Democrat's promise of 'possibly no tax increases', nor of following through on real debt reduction (what tiny bit is actually here). But let's get through Carney's piece before I elaborate...
Consider Obama's willingness in April to compromise on taxes and most spending, but to stand firm on Planned Parenthood subsidies. It looks like liberal principles took a back seat to 2012 fundraising. And this debt deal is similarly Machiavellian: Substance was subjugated to political framing. Republicans had their demands: no tax increases, yes spending cuts. Democrats' demands had a different tone.
First, Democrats wanted to ensure this was the last debt-limit increase before the 2012 elections. Raising the debt limit, as Sen. Obama said in 2006, is "a sign of leadership failure" and politically unpopular. Second, they wanted to ensure that the right issues would be debated in the election year. A high-stakes debate over a balanced budget amendment -- as required by the bill the House passed on Friday -- would make it clear that Democrats, unlike most Americans, do not want a balanced budget.
Instead, the "trigger" in the new compromise bill sets up a debate that Obama can easily cast as a fight between cutting Medicare and raising taxes on Big Oil, corporate jet owners and the richest one percent. If raising taxes on these politically disfavored classes was really the Democrats' priority, they could have done it already -- either before the 2010 elections or by driving a harder bargain in the last three budget battles. But instead, their priority is debating these targeted tax increases and pretending they will save Medicare from insolvency.
Democrats' willingness to compromise doesn't reflect superior maturity to the more rigid Republicans. Quite the contrary: It reflects caring less about policy than about politics.
All interesting points, particularly when dealing with a president whose priorities lie within his own reelection. But in the end, does the deal being brokered measure up to real solutions, as Marco Rubio spoke of in his impassioned speech on the Senate floor? Although we're told that nearly $3T is being reduced over the next 10 years, growth in the national debt due to baseline budgeting will continue to grow in excess of around $7T. So instead of running towards debt, we're now briskly walking? And that's acceptable at a time when we should be reducing spending? Oh, and for the final kick in the pants, it's probably important to note that following this battle, however it may end up in the next few days, the CR that was voted on in April, instead of a real budget, ends in September. Oh, happy days...
