UPDATE: To give one a better idea of the insignificance of Obama's budget cuts, here's a little story that's been floating around for a few days now:

President Obama ordered the cabinet to cut a whopping $100 million from the $3.5 trillion federal budget!

I’m so impressed by this sacrifice that I have decided to do the same thing with my personal budget. I spend about $2000 a month on groceries, medicine, bills, etc, but it’s time to get out the budget cutting axe, go line by line through my expenses, and go to work.

I’m going to cut my spending at exactly the same ratio -1/35,000 of my total budget. After doing the math, it looks like instead of spending $2000 a month; I’m going to have to cut that number by six cents!

Yes, I’m going to have to get by with $1999.94, but that’s what sacrifice is all about. I’ll just have to do without some things, that are, frankly, luxuries.

The man drones on about not wanting to “fight the same tired battles”, so instead “Let’s invest in our people without leaving them a mountain of debt” as he increases reckless spending and continues to manipulate and play tax games, all the while setting our course towards an unsustainable path of titanic proportions. This budget is not the only thing built on "Failures of the Past"...Obama's derelict leadership sees to that!

A word on CPAC…and at least two speakers that got it RIGHT!

By now, everyone’s heard one perspective or another concerning the rollercoaster ride that was the 2011 Conservative Political Action Conference. With the absence of many major conservative groups (now referred to as the ‘social conservatives’), brought the inclusion of several libertarian brands, and the expected pandering by some of this year’s speakers followed. However, with all the ups and downs, there were a couple of vital messages to take away from CPAC this year. No, they had nothing to do with the disrespectful Ron Paul libertarian-types, who, among an array of questionable behavior, hijack the straw poll year after year. No, it wasn’t about the inclusion of groups like GOProud either, who, as Kevin McCullough wrote in an opinion piece, were used “largely as an attempt to silence groups who would speak in strong support of traditional moral values.” And no, it even had little to do with Mitch Daniels’ speech, who mixed good intentions with a call to set ‘purity’ aside and speak beyond the base, as though conservatives are to write off principle? I’m not too keen on Ann’s insistence that Chris Christie should be a presidential nominee either. No, those were all the WRONG MESSAGES for a conference meant to highlight conservatism, because they all seem to be lacking in the ‘principled’ department.


The vital messages to take away from CPAC 2011 came from two gentlemen who literally embody the American influence that we celebrate this month. Yes, I’m referring to Black History Month. No, these gentlemen are not the usual considerations that your liberal public school educator may normally extoll during this month’s observance of historical black contributions. Nonetheless, these two individuals are men of substance, men of moral character, and men who quite to the contrary of some liberal educators, love this country, love its founding, and honor its moral traditions and values.


Earlier in the conference, came a powerful conservative message from a principled gentleman and presidential contender by the name of Herman Cain:

And closing this years conference, perhaps to the chagrin of both libertarians and establishment Republicans alike, came a profound speech of ‘presidential’ proportions from Florida’s Freshman Congressmen, Retired Lt. Col. Allen West.

I’ve heard Congressman West speak before, but this delivery spoke to my conscience in a manner that encouraged me to put him on my short list of presidential hopefuls!


Among the mixed bag of attendees and speakers, there included others who I’d consider true conservatives as well. Perhaps these two gentlemen personally had such a penetrating message, because they’re in such stark contrast to a president who embodies the liberal stereotype of whom a black man is supposed to be in our society (a.k.a. “a liberal”), and who we’re constantly discouraged not to disagree with for fear of being labeled “racist!” Cain and West don’t subscribe to that card. They are principled conservatives who GET what it means to be ‘American’, unapologetic and unhyphenated!

DEFUND Obamacare: no time to waver (UPDATE)

Folks, it might be time to light up the phone lines, faxes, emails and tweets once again. Like many, over the past week I’ve kept an attentive eye on how this might unfold. What it boils down to is that there is NO time for games. This administration is determined to implement this unconstitutionally ruled law. Thus, defunding the hemorrhaging beast should be explicitly tied to any budget vote, spending vote, debt ceiling vote, etc. Once again, if Democrats want to defy a court ruling to continue the massive funding of Obamacare during a time when we should be focusing on debt reduction and job creation, make them own it! And there is absolutely no reason we should have any Republicans showing signs of wavering…

Mr. Cantor, I understand the desire to assist Speaker Boehner in running the House completely different, particularly more encompassing, than Nancy Pelosi ever did…but that shouldn’t mean sacrificing a direct opportunity to defund what the voter’s were promised.

If we take the gamble, I sincerely hope it pays off…but it feels like a gamble that shouldn’t be played. Send the Senate an appropriate spending bill that doesn’t allocate funds to HHS implementation of Obamacare, that in this time of severe national debt, doesn’t further burden the country with added, unpopular expenses. If Democrats don’t want to vote on it and Obama doesn’t want to sign it, any shut down will be on their hands! Likewise, any arguments made by Obama, Reid, Pelosi or the rest, besides being exaggerations with false stats or simply blatant lies, would be futile in making the point that spending more money helps save us from debt?! Absurd!

UPDATE: Americans for Tax Reform reports that although there has been a hesitation on the part of the GOP leadership to consider King's amendment in the context of an appropriations bill (the Continuing Resolution) that encompasses discretionary spending only due to House rules, they've actually already made the exception for another issue: Guantanamo Bay prison transfer. If an exception can be made for that ‘mandatory’ spending, surely an exception could be made for protecting Constitutionality, as Obamacare has been ruled unconstitutional!

What Lincoln means to Americans

Today marks Abraham Lincoln’s 202nd birthday. I really don’t know what I could add that hasn’t already been said about our first Republican president and one of our greatest presidents. So many publications have been written about Lincoln, from his humble upbringing to his tragic death and everything between, particularly the significance of his presidency, some with praise, some with reproach. But without doubt, even in the most trying times of our nation’s history, Lincoln remained committed to the guidance of Natural Law and the idea instilled in our Declaration that “all men are created equal.” And perhaps fittingly so, as those difficult times during our Civil War absolutely transformed our Nation and our ideals in a different but reflective way as those first shots that established this magnificent Country.


One of the most interesting articles that I came across in deciding what to discuss on this day came from Andrew Ferguson, author of Land of Lincoln: Adventures in Abe’s America, and an article he wrote a few years back discussing what Lincoln means to Americans today.

The last section of this article particularly caught my attention, so that’s what I thought I'd share today…


Expressing the American experiment


For nearly a century, historians and sociologists have tried to explain the historical infatuation that could result in such endearing absurdities. The reasons they’ve come up with are often clever and sometimes even plausible. Lincoln continues to fascinate his countrymen like no other historical personage, we’ve been told, because he was the first such personage to be commonly photographed: He is thus more real to us than great figures from earlier times can be. And it’s true that Lincoln was exquisitely sensitive to the ways in which he presented himself to the public, including through the use of the then-new photographic art. He seldom passed up a chance to have his likeness made. Thanks to that craftiness, we seem to know him in a way we could never know George Washington or Thomas Jefferson.


Even so, goes another argument, no matter how familiar we are with his face, with the sad eyes and tousled hair, Lincoln is tantalizingly and finally unknowable; it’s this mystery that draws us back to the melancholy, humorous, intelligent, reserved, distant, and kindly man that his acquaintances described. Other historians have said our infatuation with him is rooted in the drama of his personal story: Born in abject poverty to become one of the great men of human history, Lincoln embodies the “right to rise” that Americans claim as their birthright. Still others credit his enduring fame to his assassination on Good Friday, a shock from which the country never quite recovered. The most sober-minded of our theorists say we’re obsessed with Lincoln because he presided over, and somehow exemplifies, the greatest trauma of American history, a civil war that reinvented the United States into the country we know today.


There’s truth in all these explanations, I suppose, but it’s the last one, in my opinion, that comes closest to being the comprehensive truth. I live not far from the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., that grand, photogenic temple on the banks of the Potomac River that is home to the “iconic Lincoln.” Researching my Lincoln book, spending time with scholars and collectors and obsessives and being introduced by each of them to yet another privatized Lincoln, a Lincoln pieced together from their own preoccupations, I was always glad to return home and pay the memorial a visit: to see this singular and solid Lincoln, the enduring Lincoln that every American can lay claim to.


The memorial is the most visited of our presidential monuments. The strangest thing about it, though, is the quiet that descends over the tourists who climb the wide sweeping stairway and step into the cool of the marble chamber. Before long their attention is drawn to one or both of the two Lincoln speeches etched in the walls on either side of the famous statue. After all this time I am still astonished at the number of visitors who stand still to read, on one stone panel, the Gettysburg Address, and, on the other, Lincoln’s second inaugural address.


What they’re reading is a summary of the American experiment, expressed in the finest prose any American has been capable of writing. One speech reaffirms that the country was founded upon and dedicated to a proposition—a universal truth that applies to all men everywhere. The other declares that the survival of the country is somehow bound up with the survival of the proposition—that if the country hadn’t survived, the proposition itself might have been lost. Sometimes the tourists tear up as they read; they tear up often, actually. And watching them you understand: Loving Lincoln, for Americans, is a way of loving their country.


That’s what Lincoln means to Americans today, and it’s why he means so much.

The Obama administration’s latest endeavors: high-speed rail and internet. On top of the eco aspect that’s always used for promotion, these proposals are very exemplary of our current administration’s runaway policies. How can one pledge billions in this high-stakes, high-speed agenda on the one hand, while speaking of responsible spending and necessary cuts from the other? Talk is cheap when the dog’s chasing its tail!

There’s a lot more remaining unsolved to add to that list, like our unsustainable national debt for starters! So after spending billions on high-speed internet since being elected, the effort to increase the ‘educated poor’ droves on…adding ‘computer access’ to the list of welfare subsidies?


Don’t get me wrong, we should absolutely embrace technological advancement, not simply to keep up with this country or that one, but to assist with the progress and functioning of our ever evolving society. However, at what point will we understand that avenues of private investment can pursue these endeavors, particularly if the ‘tax and regulate’ shackles were removed? Instead of dependence on the government for ‘luxuries’, why not allow competitive private industry to develop these technologies? Must we continue to depend on the State for everything, until we’re busted and everything implodes from its own indebted weight? We’re trading in the innovative genius of Edison for all of this absent grandeur?!

Our administration and too many in the media have really shown how full of it they are in trying to compare this situation to our view of ‘democracy’, making statements that it’s like ‘the American Revolution’. Not even close! As Levin more accurately describes, this transition is perhaps closer to the Bolsheviks in Russia or the French Revolution or some semblance of a civil war…not an American experiment, that’s for certain.  It's also certain that our relationship with Egypt is now tarnished.  I guess the only question that remains is: Will our administration and media continue to rattle the cage or consider a more subdued role during this transition?  If we know them like we think we do, this could get uglier.

Mr. Forbes says, “I always thought he was the finest president of my lifetime, and to be asked to do that stamp is a great honor.” The artist’s sentiment about Reagan being ‘the finest president of my lifetime’ is certainly shared by multitudes that lived through it, remember, and have passed on to the next generation.


Yet, a problematic theme of revisionism by some media outlets, pundits and politicians alike began shortly after Reagan finished his second term and stepped out of the public spotlight. Now, we have encountered a new type of ‘revisionism’ from our current president: Barack Obama’s ongoing effort to recreate his image as some type of ‘centrist’. And of course, who does Obama and his media cohorts use to compare himself with? That’s right, ‘the finest president of my lifetime’, Ronald Reagan. Due to this skewed perspective, I’ve stumbled across more than a few recent articles of interest, and I’d like to share a few with you.
