Happy Birthday, President Washington!

We're at the end of our Presidents' Month celebration, and how fitting to save the best for last. Yes, though we celebrate it the third Monday of February (along with the modern idea, however technically incorrect, that it's a celebration of all presidents), today is George Washington's actual birthday. And there can be no dissent that the Father of Our Country described in his eulogy as, “first in war, first in peace and first in the hearts of his countrymen,” was pivotal in setting the framework for this nation's change towards the exceptional and success towards a brilliant future. George Washington is a founding father for all Americans now as then...
George Washington truly belongs to us all now...

And what was most remarkable about Washington was (to riff off a fellow whose birthday the nation celebrated last month) the content of his character.

Richard Brookhiser rescued this view of Washington in his landmark 1997 book, “Founding Father.” Hidden behind myth, written off by revisionists as just another dead, white, male slave owner, Washington was in fact a man for the ages.

Born a Virginia aristocrat, he carefully cultivated his virtues — self-control, moderation, civility; his strengths physical and moral — to become the most widely admired presence first in the 13 colonies, then in the new nation.

He created two American institutions.

First was the army, which he commanded from 1775 to 1783, shaping a collection of untrained and undisciplined ragtag soldiers into a fighting force that defeated the world’s superpower, Great Britain.

He also set the future course of the US government itself. Presiding over its first years from 1789 to 1797, he understood he was setting precedents that had to last — even as many disagreed on what precise form that government should take.

Yet his importance goes far beyond his ­résumé. It was Washington who emphasized that America was a republic when he rebuked those who wanted a monarchy or an exalted president.

Likewise, he set the precedent for presidential limits by refusing entreaties that he accept a third term.

“Washington’s last service to his country was to stop serving,” writes Brookhiser.

He was not perfect... But he helped set the framework of a nation that could change for the better.


Happy 288th, President Washington! Our nation salutes your committed service, deep devotion and profound guidance in the hands of Providence. It's hard to envision a nation without you!

As anebbandflow concludes its honoring of our favorite American Presidents, and fresh off of Presidents Day, let us recommit ourselves to sharing with our friends and families, and particularly teaching our next generations, the greatness of these men and the ideals of limited governance that they set forth!
America is an exceptional country. We have become an exceptional country because of great leaders like Washington, Lincoln and Reagan. There are others too — like Thomas Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt, Harry Truman and John F. Kennedy. Yet, many of our schools gloss over these important leaders, if they even mention them at all.

Washington was so respected by his men at the conclusion for the Revolutionary War he could have been the king of the new nation. Instead, Washington wanted to help create a nation built on liberty. And after serving eight years as president of the United States of America, he returned to his beloved Mount Vernon. He set the standard for future presidents and showed us that the role of the government is to serve the people and not the other way around.

[And] how is it possible to overlook the significance of the leader who signed the Emancipation Proclamation that freed the slaves during the middle of the Civil War? It’s like we forget why his face is chiseled on the side of Mount Rushmore and why his memorial sits at the end of the National Mall. Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States and the first Republican to hold that office.

Reagan’s clear vision and steady leadership helped land the release of the American hostages in Iran on his very first day in office. That resolve and determination later led to the fall of the Soviet Union brought on by his belief in peace through strength, by rebuilding the U.S. armed forces.

The Reagan tax cuts helped boost the economy and increase revenues to the federal government. The economic boom started during his administration continued into the Bush and Clinton years.

Most importantly, Reagan restored confidence in America again. He was an optimist who viewed the United States as the shining city on the hill. Americans went from a “malaise” under President Carter to renewed optimism under Reagan.

Every student in America should learn about these three exceptional presidents during their birth month and not just celebrate a generic holiday that exists to host sales on mattresses or cars, while giving bankers and federal employees the day off. These remarkable leaders — and others like them — are part of what makes our country so great.
AMEN. And maybe it's worth shaking a few of today's malcontents a little more often to remind them of the successes our current President is actually setting them up for as well!

Presidents Day provides a national reminder for a strong, elected Commander in Chief

We haven't quite made it to Washington's actual birthday yet; however, the flags are out today and the fanfare is high, marking our nation's annual Presidents Day celebration!
Originally created 135 years ago to commemorate George Washington, Presidents Day was modified in 1971 to include recognition of Abraham Lincoln and be part of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which would give government workers a three-day weekend. Because both Washington and Lincoln were born in February, it was decided that the holiday should be on the third Monday in February every year.

Washington and Lincoln were not the only presidents with February birthdays. ... Perhaps the February-born president with the greatest modern-day impact was Ronald Reagan. He entered the world on February 6, 1911, and after a successful career as a radio broadcaster, movie star, and governor of California, would eventually be admiringly and rightfully described as "transformational" ... And indeed, that he was.
It couldn't be more timely towards remembering why our Constitution provides for a strong Commander in Chief...
On Presidents Day, we celebrate the life and accomplishments of our first president, George Washington, the father of our country, and Abraham Lincoln, our 16th president and one of our most renowned statesmen.

On that day, Feb. 17 this year, we should remember that the Framers of the Constitution wanted to ensure that an American president—such as Washington and Lincoln—would have the power to defend the country when the safety, security, and independence of its people are threatened.

And that power is exactly what they gave the president in the Constitution when they made him the commander in chief of our military forces. ...

There is no need to rehash what happened after 9/11, including the immediate steps that President George W. Bush took to safeguard the country and to go after the terrorists who had sponsored, financed, and planned the attack on America. But Bush’s actions illustrate how important it was then, and is today, that our Constitution provides for a strong commander in chief.

As the Justice Department said in a 2001 legal opinion, no law and no congressional resolution “can place any limits on the President’s determinations as to any terrorist threat, the amount of military force to be used in response or the method, timing, and nature of the response. These decisions, under our Constitution, are for the president alone to make.”

That is a good thing.

So while we are celebrating Washington, who led an eight-year fight for our liberty, and Lincoln, who fought to stop the breakup of the Union, we also should be thankful for other presidents who used the strong power of the executive to protect the nation.

That includes President Franklin Roosevelt, who led us in the largest war in our history against two brutal tyrannies, as well as Bush, who acted decisively after the worst attack on American soil since Pearl Harbor.

Trump also should be applauded for taking out a terrorist thug who had American blood on his hands, and who would have continued to kill Americans.

Americans just like those who died on United Flight 93 when it crashed in what the National Park Service appropriately calls “a field of honor forever” in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
...as well as reminding our citizenry of the, though temporary, elected position held...
...during [Reagan's] White House years, nothing seemed to irritate him as much as when people said he had “become” president. Whenever he heard that, he always interrupted the speaker to firmly say: “No, I didn’t become president. I was elected to the job, and it’s only temporary. In some countries, a person becomes a king or queen, but not here.” ...

As proud as Reagan was of being twice chosen by his fellow citizens, he never felt he was entitled to the presidency. He was not intimidated by the role, but truth to tell, seemed a bit in awe of it.
And though we've inherently stumbled from time to time throughout our brief history, it is vital for us to freely choose our Presidents wisely, always with the strength of God, Country and Constitution behind them, if we hope to retain this greatest of nations. Our prayers are for continued Providential guidance, seeking prosperity and freedom across this land, towards that ultimate, eternal glorification.
O LORD our Governor, whose glory is in all the world; We commend this nation to thy merciful care, that being guided by thy Providence, we may dwell secure in thy peace. Grant to THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, and to all in Authority, wisdom and strength to know and to do thy will. Fill them with the love of truth and righteousness; and make them ever mindful of their calling to serve this people in thy fear; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.

Happy Birthday, President Lincoln!

Next stop on anebbandflow's "Presidents' Month" celebration of our favorite American Presidents is of course Honest Abe, a man “both steel and velvet,” with so much to learn from... 
Lincoln’s roles in steering the country through the Civil War and in ending the scourge of slavery are well known — and rightfully so. But we sometimes forget that it was, in large measure, his deep understanding of the Constitution that enabled him to rise to such greatness at the moment of crisis.

Take his view of the judiciary’s role in our structure of government. Lincoln, of course, deplored the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in the 1857 Dred Scott case, which denied full citizenship rights to African-Americans. But in expressing his opposition, he affirmed the court’s role as a co-equal branch of government:
“The candid citizen must confess that if the policy of the government upon vital questions and affecting the whole people is to be irrevocably fixed by decisions of the Supreme Court, the people will have ceased to be their own rulers, having, to that extent, practically resigned their government into the hands of that eminent tribunal.”
How can we learn from this today? In a speech marking the bicentennial of Lincoln’s birth, former U.S. Attorney General Edwin Meese observed:
“I believe, following Lincoln’s example, that the Congress can be much more active and much more assertive in its role in relation to the judiciary. There are a number of ways in which this can happen. The Senate can more carefully fulfill its role in the selection of federal judges.”
We should also, at a time when some politicians openly embrace socialism, remember Lincoln’s thoughts on liberty:
“I believe each individual is naturally entitled to do as he pleases with himself and the fruit of his labor, so far as it in no wise interferes with any other man’s rights and that the general government, upon principle, has no right to interfere with anything other than that general class of things that does concern the whole.”
There’s another thing we can learn from Lincoln today, according to Mr. Meese: The importance of national unity.
“Lincoln was compelled to unify the nation by force of arms, and he also sought to unify the people themselves emotionally, by patience, compassion, and persuasion. I would suggest that, today, we must unify the nation by the force of our ideas, by the validity of our principles, and by the persuasiveness of our rhetoric.”
When President Reagan called America “a shining city on a hill,” he echoed Lincoln: “My dream is of a place and time where America will once again be seen as the last, best hope on earth.”

May it always be our dream as well.
And 'The Speech' that gained Lincoln notoriety through the centuries wholly encapsulates that persistent sentiment...

Spring Cleaning & it's starting to feel like morning in America again...

What a magnificent week of vindication in every respect. Fresh off the Senate's acquittal of the Dems' failed impeachment coup, the President continues to both kick ass abroad...


...and take names here at home!


U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland, who testified about President Trump’s Ukraine dealings during the House impeachment hearings, said Friday he had been recalled from his overseas position, hours after a National Security Council aide who testified against the president was also fired.

Sondland's recall follows the dismissal of another impeachment witness, Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, who was fired by the National Security Council and escorted off of the White House grounds on Friday.
Looks like the Nuge was right all along! Add to that a federal appeals court WIN...
A federal appeals court on Friday unanimously ruled that more than 200 Democratic congressional lawmakers do not have standing to sue President Trump over allegations he violated the Emoluments Clause over foreign payments to his businesses.

“Because we conclude that the Members lack standing, we reverse the district court and remand with instructions to dismiss their complaint,” the Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit said in its ruling.
...and rolling off the Gipper's birthday, Levin stated it perfectly yesterday: President Trump is politically stronger today than ever, and as a result, it's certainly starting to feel like morning in America again...

Happy Birthday, President Reagan!

This is anebbandflow's unofficial opening of Presidents' Month, a celebration of our favorite American Presidents, who coincidentally (or Providentially) all have February birthdays, culminating in our national Presidents' Day holiday. We of course start off with the Gipper!
Thursday, Feb. 6, marks the 109th anniversary of President Ronald Wilson Reagan’s birthday, or, as he would have phrased it, the 70th anniversary of his 39th birthday.

Either way, we’re grateful beyond measure for his service to our country, the shining City on a Hill, and his steadfast devotion to American Liberty.

In honor of his birthday, we remember “The Speech” — his 1964 address that vaulted him to national prominence:
"...This idea — that government is beholden to the people, that it has no other source of power, except the sovereign people — is still the newest, most unique idea in all the long history of man’s relation to man. This is the issue of this election: Whether we believe in our capacity for self-government or whether we abandon the American Revolution and confess that a little intellectual elite in a far-distant capital can plan our lives for us better than we can plan them ourselves.

You and I are told increasingly we have to choose between a left or right. Well, I'd like to suggest there is no such thing as a left or right, there's only an up or down: Man's own old-aged dream — the ultimate in individual freedom consistent with law and order — or down to the ant heap of totalitarianism. And regardless of their sincerity, their humanitarian motives, those who would trade our freedom for security have embarked on this downward course."
"The full power of centralized government — this was the very thing the Founding Fathers sought to minimize. They knew that governments don't control things. A government can’t control the economy without controlling people. And they knew when a government sets out to do that, it must use force and coercion to achieve its purpose. They also knew, those Founding Fathers, that outside of its legitimate functions, government does nothing as well or economically as the private sector of the economy."
Reagan of course concluded that one with the equally famous, “You and I have a rendezvous with destiny.”

Among Reagan's most famous and influential speeches during his presidency were his '86 Challenger Disaster address, '87 "Tear Down This Wall" speech, and '89 Farewell Address to the Nation.

But perhaps more than any other US president, as AEI recalls, "Ronald Reagan had a wonderful sense of humor and he demonstrated his keen wit in many of his public speeches. You can see many great examples of Reagan’s humor in the video below titled “The Best of Reagan.”"



A truly classic American President in both gracefulness and patriotism. THE 20th century President! Happy Heavenly Birthday, President Reagan! Our nation salutes you on this day and misses you immensely.

President Trump proudly displayed two newspapers with blaring “Acquitted” headlines Thursday morning, waving them before a National Prayer Breakfast audience in his first appearance since he was declared not guilty in his Senate impeachment trial.

The president brandished the headlines mere feet from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., after both arrived at the breakfast.


Trump first picked up a USA Today newspaper and presented it before the audience. He then put it down and picked up a copy of Thursday’s Washington Post, which had a similar headline.
He later addressed the audience and took some not-so-subtle swipes at Pelosi once more.

"I don't like people who use their faith as justification for doing what they know is wrong, nor do I like people who say 'I pray for you' when you know that is not so," he said. Pelosi had publicly said during the impeachment process that she and fellow Democrats were "prayerful" and that she prays for the president.

Trump also called impeachment a "terrible ordeal by some very dishonest and corrupt people."

For Trump, the moment was payback not only for impeachment but her conduct at the close of Tuesday's State of the Union address.
I know, shocking that Pelosi would actually even show up for the prayer breakfast...but at least the President served the Speaker a little dessert!

ADDENDUM: Following prayer breakfast comments the morning after his Senate acquittal, President Trump officially addressed the nation, thanking the ‘incredible warriors’ who stood with him through this ‘crooked’ impeachment...
President Donald Trump delivered a speech to the nation Thursday celebrating his impeachment trial acquittal the day before, blasting the process as “crooked” and thanking the “incredible warriors” who sided with him during the ordeal.

Trump described the event as a celebration of another victory over the “evil” forces allied against him.

“Today is the day to celebrate these great warriors, right?” Trump said. “These are great warriors. They really fought hard for us.” The president’s address was populated with Cabinet members and staffers, as well as activists and allies. ...

Trump’s legal team was also present and got a standing ovation. “Great job,” he told them.
“Mitch McConnell, I want to tell you, you did a fantastic job,” he said, praising the Senate Majority Leader for outsmarting his opposition.

“This guy is great,” Trump said. “He’s a tough guy to read… that’s what makes him good.”

“There were some who used religion as a crutch,” Trump said, mocking “failed presidential candidate” Sen. Mitt Romney.

Trump singled out Mike Lee — Romney’s senior colleague representing Utah — for praise, asking him to tell the people of their state “sorry for Mitt Romney.”

He ripped Democrats like House Oversight Chairman Adam Schiff (“a failed screenwriter”) and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (“a horrible person”), mocking the House Speaker’s insistence that she was praying for the president. “I doubt she prays at all,” he said.

Trump denounced the entire process as “crooked politics” from senators who were also running for president in 2020. ...

“It was all bullshit,” Trump said about the “Russia, Russia, Russia” hoax and the Robert Mueller investigation and FBI surveillance. The president mused about whether he should sue former MI6 spy Christopher Steele for the discredited oppo-research dossier which gave cover for federal surveillance of his campaign.

Trump noted that he was under attack from the establishment since the beginning, criticizing several D.C. operatives as “dirty cops,” “leakers,” and “liars.”

At the end of the speech, the president recognized his family for sticking through the process.

“I want to apologize to my family for having them go through a phony rotten deal by some very evil and sick people,” Trump said, singling out Ivanka and Barron Trump. First Lady Melania Trump also joined the president on the stage as the room applauded.

He thanked his family for remaining loyal to him throughout the entire impeachment process.

“They stuck with me and I’m so glad I did it, because we are making progress and we are doing things for our great people,” Trump said.

Epic SOTU address: It's about the American People, stupid!

Last night, President Trump presented not only an epic State of the Union address before Congress highlighting his administration's accomplishments, but many of those accomplishments emphasized the energy behind our exceptional American movement and the quintessential part of what makes our country great, the AMERICAN PEOPLE! Dems reacted about as expected to such a message...
President Donald Trump’s rousing State of the Union address to a divided Congress encouraged his supporters with bold defense of conservative values, overtly reached out to independents on the basis of successful implementation of domestic policy goals, and in so doing enraged the Democrat left on what was already a difficult day for them.

Trump highlighted the booming economy, articulated his foreign policy, and tied his vision for the American future to its heroic past and frontier spirit. He also gave a scholarship in real time, bestowed a Medal of Freedom in real time, and dramatically reunited a family with their soldier husband and father, making for the most emotional State of the Union address since President Reagan first began highlighting American heroes in the gallery during his annual address.
President Trump went into the State of the Union emboldened by his highest voter approval numbers of his presidency. Impeachment led Democratic favorability to decline while Republicans enjoyed majority support for the first time in recent memory. He is about to be acquitted, probably in a bipartisan fashion.

All of those numbers are bad for Pelosi and the Democratic Party she leads. In addition, they had a humiliating debacle of a caucus night in Iowa. The party botched its operation, meaning that the result is still uncertain. But what is known is that the establishment’s favorite candidate, past Vice President Joe Biden, suffered a humiliating finish.

The decision to be hostile throughout the speech caused Democrats to look small and petty, particularly as President Trump spoke of big successes and big goals for the future. Pelosi appeared distracted during the speech, rifling through papers and chomping on her gums. Her ripping stunt at the end of the speech was extremely well received by the media and other partisans on Twitter, but was less likely to play well among average voters.
And as theRightScoop reported this morning, "Pelosi did far more to hurt Democrats last night with her facial expressions and ripping up the SOTU than anything else. So keep up the good work!" The White House and Senate Republicans took note immediately...
As have the American people, even of Independent and Democratic persuasions:
Hey, Dems, NEWSFLASH: It's not about you, it's not about government, it's not even about Trump, it's about the American People, stupid! And this particular President understands that, which is why he's receiving such reciprocal support from Americans en masse.

Prayers for Rush

Shocking news today concerning Limbaugh's health...many prayers headed your way, El Rushbo!
Famed conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh announced on Monday that he has been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer and that he will miss time from the show to receive treatment.

Rush proceeded to share a little about his faith, which was a comfort and blessing to hear. Thus, I share this prayer with him, his wife, his family, friends and audience...
O FATHER of mercies and God of all comfort, our only help in time of need; We humbly beseech thee to behold, visit, and relieve thy sick servant, Rush, for whom our prayers are desired. Look upon him with the eyes of thy mercy; comfort him with a sense of thy goodness; preserve him from the temptations of the enemy; and give him patience under his affliction. In thy good time, restore him to health, and enable him to lead the residue of his life in thy fear, and to thy glory; and grant that finally he may dwell with thee in life everlasting; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
